Psychiatry is a branch of medicine, and psychiatrists are physicians who specialize
in behavior and the brain. They receive an undergraduate degree, attend medical
school for four years, and then complete residency training for 4 more years plus
additional time for fellowships. Psychiatrists specialize in the treatment of mental
illness while understanding the medical underpinnings of these disorders. They are
able to understand how medical conditions can affect the brain and can also
recognize medical conditions that may mimic certain mental illnesses. There are
other professionals who also treat psychiatric conditions such as psychologists (PhD
or PsyD), Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health
Counselors, but they are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medications or
analyze medical problems.
When a person starts to experience issues that they cannot handle on their own, or
family members or friends start to see changes in a person’s behavior, it may be
time to consult with a psychiatrist. Difficulty sleeping, feeling depressed or anxious,
or being unable to cope with stress may be signs that it’s time to make an
appointment. As a psychiatrist is uniquely qualified to understand your symptoms
from a broad medical perspective, you can get the treatment you need to get back on
your feet.
At your first visit with Dr. Zinzuvadia, a typical session may last anywhere from 60-
90 minutes. We will go over your background so we can get to know you better, and
then we will discuss your medical history, past treatment, and which symptoms
bring you into the office today. As a psychiatrist, it will be important to understand
your medical history and then integrate that with your social background and
psychological factors. After gathering this information, we can discuss treatment
options and our recommendations. If you agree with the plan, we will set up a
structure for follow up visits and further outline what your treatment will look like.
There are a few different types of appointments depending on your type of
treatment. For medication management follow-up visits, a typical appointment may
last from 15-30 minutes. Sessions involving more complex psychotherapy may last
30-45 minutes. These sessions may involve assignments to take home and complete
before the next visit.
After carefully constructing a plan to treat your specific concerns, we will decide
how often is right for you. Sometimes, the beginning stages of treatment require
more frequent sessions, from once a week to once every two weeks. After reaching
a certain point, you may be able to come in once a month if we are doing medication
management. If you are receiving psychotherapy in addition to medication
management, we will decide together how frequently you should come in, and it
could be as frequently as every 1-2 weeks.
Sometimes, patients may want to bring in a family member during a session or a
patient may even require family or caregivers to bring them in for other reasons. It
is ultimately your choice as to whom you want to involve in your care.
If you have a question about scheduling, you can call our office or send us an email
and we will get back to you within 1 business day. If you have a question for Dr.
Zinzuvadia that can be answered over the phone, he will be glad to do so. However,
we ask that if your question will take more than a few minutes that you please come
in for an appointment so we have adequate time to address your concerns. Dr.
Zinzuvadia is available after business hours and on weekends for urgent issues that
may arise.
